Identifying Features
Plant Family: Pinaceae
Leaf: evergreen needles, groups of 5 persisting for 3-4 years, 5-8 inches long, gray-green to blue-green with older needles spreading and drooping creating a graceful appearance
Twig and Bud: stout, bluish-green stems
Flower, Fruit and Seed: solitary, cylindrical seed cones, 6-10 inches long, hang from stems on their second year
Bark: bluish green
Shape and Mature Height: straight trunk with down curved branches, 30-50 feet tall with variable widths
Garden Value and Considerations
This tree is very difficult to transplant and requires well-drained soils. It will grow best in a sheltered location near a building or other taller evergreen conifers. Grow in full sun to part shade. Himalayan pine has a relatively high tolerance for air pollution.
