Identifying Features
Plant Family: Pinaceae
Native Range: Northeastern Asia
Leaf: evergreen needles, in groups of 5, persisting for three years, 2 ½ -4 ½ inch needles are dark green on the outside and the inner surfaces are grayish revealing a bluish green color
Twig and Bud: reddish brown twig color
Flower, Fruit and Seed: seed cones are short stalked, cylindrical, 3 ½ -6 inches long
Bark: thin, gray and grayish brown
Shape and Mature Height: loose pyramidal outline, typically 40 feet tall in cultivation, may grow up to 100 feet tall
Garden Value and Considerations
Grow in moist, well-drained soil in full sun. Grows nicely as a specimen plant as well as a grouping or part of screen
Notes
Korean pines are a common source of edible pine nuts. Its timber is used in construction and for furniture.
