Identifying Features
Plant Family: Fagaceae
Leaf: deciduous, alternate, simple with wavy edge
Twig and Bud: buds long, brown and sharply-pointed
Flower, Fruit and Seed: triangular nut inside prickly husk
Bark: smooth and gray
Shape and Mature Height: pyramidal to oval or rounded crown, grows to 20-30 feet tall
Garden Value and Considerations
Tricolor beeches have variegated leaves with shades of green, white and pink. The leaves may scorch in full sun, part shade is preferable. Tricolor beeches are intolerant of poorly-drained soils and hot, dry conditions.
